Frederick Douglass Bridge

Edit Back to listing

Description

The South Capitol Street Corridor Project calls for replacing the 63 year old Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge and transforming related sections of urban freeway into a beautiful scenic boulevard that increases pedestrian and vehicular safety, improves multi-modal transportation options, increases community accessibility and supports economic development on both sides of the Anacostia River.

The improvements include constructing a traffic oval and circle on either end of the span and reconstructing the Interstate 295/Suitland Parkway interchange. Today the bridge carries over 70,000 vehicles daily.
